GCIS INTELLIGENCE UPDATE:  – Habib Malik, a Lebanese Maronite Catholic scholar and human rights advocate, recently warned Western countries to be on their guard against radical Islamic forces that present themselves as political “moderates” in countries such as Libya and Egypt.

“Another fallacy is rearing its head again, and we saw this prior to 9/11,” said Malik in a March 31 address at Washington, D.C.'s Westminster Institute. “It's now coming back into the discourse, unfortunately, in Washington: this very wrong and dangerous idea that 'there are moderate fundamentalists and there are radical fundamentalists, and maybe we can talk to the moderate fundamentalists and wean them away from it.'”

“This is garbage, and nonsense,” said Malik, author of the 2010 book “Islamism and the Future of the Christians of the Middle East,” as he described the notion of “moderate” Islamic radicalism as a fantasy entertained by the West. “It doesn't exist. There is no such thing. What appears to be moderate can, in an instant, flip and change.”

“When you're thousands of miles away, in a place like Washington, you give this armchair analysis that generates policy, about 'moderate' and 'radical' fundamentalists. This eventually translates itself very adversely, on the scene over there. It affects whole communities of Christians on the ground.”

In both Libya and Egypt, the U.S. State Department has acted and spoken in favor of movements calling for democracy and human rights while avoiding religious rhetoric. However, Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood played a significant part in overturning a government they had long opposed in favor of a religious state.

Meanwhile, Libyan rebel leader Abdel-Hakim al-Hasidi has acknowledged the presence of fighters linked to al-Qaida among his troops. President Barack Obama told CBS Evening News in March that the Libyan rebels were “saying the right things” and appeared “credible,” although he admitted they might contain “elements that are unfriendly to the United States and our interests.” (read full report)

The package was addressed to Ulil Abshar Abdalla, a well-known liberal Muslim figure who espouses pluralism and religious tolerance.

GCIS INTELLIGENCE UPDATE: STERLING, Va. — Muslim Americans are not part of the terrorism problem facing the U.S. – they are part of the solution, a top White House official said Sunday at a Washington-area mosque.

Islamic Radicalization of AmericansDeputy National Security Adviser Denis McDonough set the Obama administration's tone for discussions as tensions escalate before the first in a series of congressional hearings on Islamic radicalization. The hearings, chaired by New York Republican Peter King, will focus on the level of cooperation from the Muslim community to help law enforcement combat radicalization.

The majority of the recent terror plots and attempts against the U.S. have involved people espousing a radical and violent view of Islam. Just a few weeks ago a college student from Saudi Arabia who studied chemical engineering in Texas was arrested after he bought explosive chemicals online. It was part of a plan to hide bomb materials inside dolls and baby carriages and blow up dams, nuclear plants or the Dallas home of former President George W. Bush.

King said the Muslim community could and should do more to work with law enforcement to stop its members from radicalizing and recruiting others to commit violence.

"I don't believe there is sufficient cooperation" by American Muslims with law enforcement, King said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union." "Certainly my dealings with the police in New York and FBI and others say they do not believe they get the same – they do not give the level of cooperation that they need." (read full report)

GCIS INTELLIGENCE UPDATE: Frankfurt – Arid Uka was a typical product of Frankfurt, a city where Arid Ukaa third of the population is not originally from Germany. An ethnic Albanian born in Kosovo and raised Muslim, he grew up in a middle-class family in Germany and lived with his parents and siblings. It was only recently that he turned to radical Islam, apparently connecting with extremists on Facebook and online jihadi forums.

On Wednesday, Mr. Uka became the first person to successfully carry out a terrorist attack in Germany since 9/11. He has been charged with killing two US airmen and wounding two others at the Frankfurt airport in an act that German prosecutors say Uka carried out on his own. In court Thursday, he confessed to the killings and said he shot the four men because he felt America was at war with Islam. (read full report)

GCIS INTELLIGENCE UPDATE: A bill introduced Tuesday in the Alabama Senate would ban the use of Islamic law in Alabama courts.

Sharia LawThe bill’s sponsor said the measure was designed to protect future generations from erosion of the Constitution. One Birmingham area Muslim leader said the move was an effort to “demonize Islam and Muslims.”

But no one — not even Sen. Gerald Allen, who sponsored the bill — can point to examples of Muslims trying to have Islamic law recognized in Alabama courts.

“It’s not about what’s happening right now,” Allen, a Republican from Cottondale, said in a telephone interview.

“I’m thinking about 10 years down the road, 20, 30, 40. Time has an effect on these things, and I’m thinking about the future.”

Allen is the sole sponsor of SB 62, a bill that would ban Alabama courts from using Shariah law or international law in making legal decisions. (read full report)

GCIS INTELLIGENCE UPDATE: TEHRAN – A senior member of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, Kamal al-Halbavi, praised Iran's role in consolidating unity and solidarity among the Muslim countries throughout the world.

"Given the recent developments in the region, we need unity among the Muslim countries and Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejadcan play an important role in this regard," Halbavi said on Sunday, addressing a conference in Tehran dubbed 'Islamic Awakening in Arab World'.

He also called Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad his favorite leaders in the world, and said, "He is the bravest man in the Muslim world and we (in Egypt) need innocent, honest and brave leaders like him."

Halbavi reiterated that the West is opposed to the progress of the Muslim countries and that's why the world powers are against Iran's progress in scientific and technological fields.

Despite the rules enshrined in the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) entitling every member state, including Iran, to the right of uranium enrichment, Tehran is now under four rounds of UN Security Council sanctions for turning down West's calls to give up its right of uranium enrichment.

Tehran has dismissed West's demands as politically tainted and illogical, stressing that sanctions and pressures merely consolidate Iranians' national resolve to continue the path.  (read full report)

GCIS INTELLIGENCE UPDATE: The Libyan ambassador to the United States plans to raise the country’s pre-Gaddafi flag over his Washington, D.C. home Friday afternoon, a U.S. Muslim organization says.

Ambassador Ali Aujali, who resigned earlier this week, “will raise the flag of the pre-Gaddafi era at the Pre-qaddafi flagresidence of the Libyan ambassador in Washington, D.C.” at 2 p.m. Friday, according to the announcement from the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

“There will also be a prayer vigil for all those killed or injured by Gaddafi's forces,” CAIR said, adding that there are about 500 Libyan-Americans in the capital area. The ambassador’s home is in the posh Kalorama neighborhood, where many diplomats live.

Aujali, who announced his resignation Tuesday, could not be reached for further comment.

“I am resigning from serving the regime I am serving, but not resigning from serving our people,” Aujali told Australia’s “The World Today” show on Thursday. “They need me to be around to get the international community to raise their voice, to stop this massacre killing in eastern parts of the country, of Libya and then the western part of Libya.” (read full report)

GCIS INTELLIGENCE UPDATE: TULSA, Oklahoma — A Tulsa Police Captain has been disciplined because he refused to order officers to attend the Islamic Society's law enforcement appreciation day next month.

He is being investigated by TPD's Internal Affairs for violating the department's obedience policy.

News On 6 crime reporter Lori Fullbright has obtained TPD memos that say Captain Paul Fields believes it was unlawful for the department to tell him to order officers to go to the event so he refused.

Officer disciplined for refusing order to attend "voluntary" Islamic eventFields said the order conflicted with his personal religious convictions and violated his civil rights.

He said if it was a call for service, he would readily respond, but just an invitation to tour a mosque, watch a prayer service, meet Muslim leadership and receive a presentation of their beliefs wasn't related to his work as a police officer.

A flyer from the Islamic Society of Tulsa invites all Tulsa officers to attend the law enforcement appreciation day on March 4, 2011.

"We tried to anticipate these concerns by stating on the invitation what time the prayer service begins and ends so they could come observe if they wanted or if they wanted nothing to do with the religious portion, they could come, eat, visit and leave at their leisure," Sheryl Siddiqui, Islamic Society of Tulsa, said.

Memos show it was originally voluntary to attend, but because of a lack of people signing up, Deputy Chief Daryl Webster sent a memo saying each patrol division would send a total of 6 officers and 3 supervisors to the event. (read full report)

GCIS INTELLIGENCE UPDATE: Despite nearly a decade of war, al Qaeda is stronger today than when it carried out the 9/11 attacks. Before 2001, its history was checkered with mostly failed attempts to fulfill its most enduring goal: the unification of other militant Islamist groups under its Al Qaedastrategic leadership. However, since fleeing Afghanistan to Pakistan's tribal areas in late 2001, al Qaeda has founded a regional branch in the Arabian Peninsula and acquired franchises in Iraq and the Maghreb. Today, it has more members, greater geographic reach, and a level of ideological sophistication and influence it lacked ten years ago.

Still, most accounts of the progress of the war against al Qaeda contend that the organization is on the decline, pointing to its degraded capacity to carry out terrorist operations and depleted senior leadership as evidence that the group is at its weakest since 9/11. But such accounts treat the central al Qaeda organization separately from its subsidiaries and overlook its success in expanding its power and influence through them. These groups should not be ignored. All have attacked Western interests in their regions of operation. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has also long targeted the United States, but its efforts have moved beyond the execution stage only in the last two years, most recently with the foiled plot to bomb cargo planes in October 2010. And although al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has not yet attacked outside its region, al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) was reportedly involved in the June 2007 London and Glasgow bomb plots. Part One: Imam Abdul Alim Musa: A Drug Lord turned Hezbollah supporter

GCIS INTELLIGENCE UPDATE: The difference with Muslim cleric Abdul Alim Musa is he is not from the Middle East, but rather an African-American named Clarence Reams with a long criminal past. Known by his criminal nom de guerre, ” Big Hank,” instead of what he calls his “slave name,” Musa was an international drug dealer and well-known criminal personality in Oakland, California who Imam Abdul Alim Musaconverted to Islam while in the U.S. prison system. One source for this article has described Musa’s adoption of militant Islam as payback for the U.S. government putting him behind bars, an old adage “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” He operates a Muslim group called Sabiqun that seeks to establish an Islamic world order and is an honored guest speaking at mosques in California and anti-Israel events at colleges like UC Irvine and UCLA.

Musa has gone on record publicly stating that “Jews are the enemy of humanity” and he openly supports both Hamas and Hezbollah, the Iranian terrorist proxies. Musa is a perfect example how the militant Islamists take people from the lower classes in our society and elevate them in stature to promote an internal “revolution” against the established state. Besides lecturing at other mosques in the US besides his own, Musa lectures at universities and colleges where he is a frequent guest of the Muslims Students Associations that operate at the behest of the Saudis.

While in Oakland during the 1960s, Musa associated with H. Rap Brown, who later also adopted a radical version of Islam and became known as Imam Jamil al-Amin. Al-Amin was imprisoned after murdering an American black police officer during a traffic stop in Atlanta.

“Big Hank” was later arrested for setting up a drug dealing heroin and currency smuggling operation in Colombia, and was also charged with assaulting a federal agent. Later, he fled to Algeria, where he hooked up with several self-exiled Black Panther leaders such as the late Eldridge Cleaver. He eventually returned to the United States and turned himself in. While in prison, “Big Hank” converted to Islam and adopted his Arabic Islamic name. He became a radical and supported Khomeini’s 1979 Iranian Islamic revolution, believing, or at least wanting to believe that Khomeini’s oppressive regime would lead to global Islamic dominance as Iran is striving for today. Once Khomeini’s regime was installed in power, Musa declared his unwavering support for the new Iranian dictator and his program of anti-Americanism. He has made several visits since the 1980’s to Iran proclaiming himself the representative of American Muslims and pledging undying support for the regime. He has managed to ally himself with anti-American Muslims, both Sunni and Shia since then and encouraged unity of purpose as being the road to success for Islam against the United States.

To promote this unity Abdul Musa uses anti-Semitism. The ADL has described his statements as a theme that “propagates a radical and anti-Semitic ideology.” He accuses Jews of being responsible for the slave trade prior to the 20th century to inflame African-American passions against the Jewish community in the same manner as Louis Farrakhan does with this Black Muslims group. Musa has demanded, “Who ran the slave trade…who funded it? You’ll study and you will find out: the Jews…It was the Jewish bankers…In Vienna, with pockets full of money, funding and insuring, that’s who did it…You can’t tell us about no Holocaust. Between the African Americans and the Native Americans, everybody else’s stuff was small potatoes.”

Historically inaccurate and designed to promote Jew-hatred, his speeches are heard even on “enlightened” U.S. college campuses. At the University of Washington under the invitation of the Black Students Commission where he proclaimed America was controlled by Jews and that “Yahuds [Jews] are the enemy of humanity.” In California he has spoken on campuses such as at UC Irvine, currently considered one of the most anti-Semitic campuses in the country by assorted civil rights organizations.

Challenged publicly on his anti-Semitism, Musa tries to claim he only opposes supporters of Israel or “Zionists” and not Jews in general, but he has drawn allusions in his sermons to “Yahuds” [Jews] even back to Mohammed’s days with them in Saudi Arabia and described them as conniving and responsible for usury.

Musa even challenged the FBI to arrest him once for funding Hamas, one of the terrorist groups funded by the Khomeini regime in Iran and similar to Hezbollah. Waving a check made out to Hamas at a demonstration in 1999, he dared the government to do something about it. The check however was never presented nor cashed. (read full report)

GCIS INTELLIGENCE UPDATE: Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Sunday called on Muslims to "remove" the United States from the Islamic world.

Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei"The main problem in the Muslim world is the presence of the United States. It is the biggest problem. We need to address that," he told a gathering of Shiite and Sunni scholars in Tehran for an international conference on Islam.

"It is necessary to remove the United States from the Islamic world," the all-powerful cleric and Islamic republic's commander-in-chief said, adding that the country's arch-foe was currently weak.

Khamenei urged Muslims worldwide to preserve the "people's movement in Egypt," saying it was the duty of both the people and dignitaries of Arab nations and the entire Islamic community.

GCIS INTELLIGENCE UPDATE: Jakarta, Indonesia — Three Christian churches in Indonesia were destroyed by an angry mob during clashes with police Tuesday that erupted after a local court Muslims burn Christian churches in Indonesiahanded down a verdict against a Christian man accused of blasphemy against Islam, authorities said.

The man was given a five-year sentence, said national police spokesman Col. Boy Rafli Amar, but the protesters wanted him to face a stiffer penalty.

The destroyed churches were in Temanggung, Central Java, Amar said. "The scene is now under police control," he said. "It's calm but security is high."

Security personnel are searching for those responsible for the attack on the churches, and authorities are "asking local religious leaders to stay calm and find diplomatic ways to solve the problem."

The attacks were the second violent incident against minority religious groups in Indonesia in the past three days. On Sunday, a mob of about 1,000 people, wielding knives and stones, attacked about 25 members of the Muslim minority sect, Ahmadiyah, in Cikeusik village in West Java's Banten province.

Three people were killed and six others injured. The crowd opposed the presence of the Ahmadiyah in the village and demanded the group stop its activities. (read full report)

GCIS/MSS INTELLIGENCE UPDATE: For the first time, a U.S. government supports granting a Muslim Brotherhoodgovernment role to an extremist Islamic organization: the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.

On Monday, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Egypt's new government will have to include a "whole host of important non-secular actors." Most prominent among these is clearly the Muslim Brotherhood – which has made Islamic world domination one of its ultimate goals. It also opposes Egypt's 30-year-old peace treaty with Israel.

Gibbs said the Muslim Brotherhood must reject violence and recognize democratic goals for the U.S. to be comfortable with it assuming a role in the new government. This caveat does not significantly alter the new American approach, which is very different than that of the previous Administration, in which George W. Bush pushed Mubarak for democratic reforms but never publicly accepted a role for Islamists. (read full report)

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that if democracy prevails in Egypt then it will not pose a threat to peace with Israel.

"All those who value freedom are inspired by the calls for democratic reforms in Egypt," Netanyahu said during a speech to the Knesset. "An Egypt that will adopt these reforms will be a source of hope for the world. As much as the foundations for democracy are stronger, the foundations for peace are stronger."

The prime minister said that there is a risk that instability in Egypt could last for years, and called for "bolstering Israel's might" in response to the turmoil. (read full report)

Cairo besieged by tanks and fighter jets in response to protestsGCIS/MSS INTELLIGENCE UPDATE: Egypt sent its tanks into Cairo over the weekend and its fighter planes soared through the skies overhead in an effort to persuade protesters to return home.

Military helicopters hovered over the crowds and trucks of soldiers appeared in the central square of the capital where protesters continued to call for the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak.

State media reported that Mubarak held talks with top military commanders earlier in the day, as troops attempted to enforce a 4:00 p.m. curfew in a city of some 18 million people.

Hundreds of Muslim terrorists and thousands of other inmates were freed by armed gangs from jails across the capital just before dawn on Sunday. The former prisoners rushed into the city with guns, sticks and clubs, indiscriminately smashing cars and robbing people. (read full report)

GCIS INTELLIGENCE UPDATE:  U.S. border authorities have arrested a controversial Muslim cleric who was deported from Canada to Tunisia three years ago and was caught earlier this month trying to sneak into California inside the trunk of a BMW, according to court documents.

Said Jaziri, the former Imam of a Muslim congregation in Montreal, was hidden inside a car driven by a San Diego-area man who was pulled over by U.S. Border Patrol agents near an Indian casino east of San Diego. Jaziri allegedly paid a Tijuana-based smuggling group $5,000 to get him across the border near Tecate, saying he wanted to be taken to a “safe place anywhere in the U.S.”

The arrest marks the unexpected resurfacing of the 43-year-old cleric, whose protracted legal battle to avoid deportation drew headlines in Canada. A Tunisian immigrant, Jaziri was deported for failing to disclose a criminal conviction in France while applying for refugee status in the mid-1990s.

But Jaziri’s supporters said he was targeted for his fundamentalist views: Jaziri backed Sharia law for Canadian Muslims and led protests over the publication of the prophet Muhammad cartoons in a Danish newspaper in 2006.  (read full report)
